The interest spike has been generated by $3.90-per-gallon gasoline — the highest national average in nearly three years — following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz in response to US and Israeli military strikes. That waterway carries roughly one-fifth of global oil supply, and its disruption elevated crude and retail fuel prices in the US rapidly. CarEdge’s Justin Fischer said the resulting search activity is a genuine demand signal, not just casual browsing. Converting that signal into sales requires several things to work together. Price accessibility is the first.
Used EVs below $25,000 from Tesla, Chevrolet, and Nissan are addressing this requirement more effectively than at any previous point — Edmunds’ Jessica Caldwell said these vehicles represent a genuinely compelling value proposition for motivated buyers. The gap between EV and conventional used vehicle pricing has narrowed considerably, reducing a previously significant barrier. Range anxiety and charging access remain the second major conversion barrier. Don Francis of the EV Club of the South said these concerns continue to hold back potential buyers even as interest rises.
Addressing them requires better charging infrastructure — a long-term investment challenge — and better consumer education about the real-world range capabilities of modern EVs. Community resources like EV clubs, personal testimony from existing owners, and improved information during the research process all contribute to overcoming this barrier. Policy certainty is the third factor. Buyers making a multi-year financial commitment to an EV benefit from confidence that the regulatory and incentive environment will not shift dramatically against their interests.
The current policy environment, which has moved against EV support, is not providing that confidence. Durable conversion from interest to purchase, at a market-moving scale, likely requires more policy stability than the US EV market has experienced in recent years.
